[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Αβέβαιης ετυμολ. Το θ. τού τ. κρόκη συνδέεται πιθ. με το κρέκω ή το κρόκη, ενώ ο παρλλ. τ. κροκάλη εμφανίζει επίθημα -άλη (πρβλ. αγκ-άλη) και συνδέεται με αρχ. ινδ. sarkarā «χοντρή άμμος, βότσαλο»].
